British National Formulary

The British National Formulary (BNF) is an authoritative source of information on medicines prescribed in the UK, published jointly twice a year by the British Medical Association and the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain. Some information on the site is freely accessible: to access the full BNF text and some other sections registration is required.

BSE Inquiry

The archived official site of the Inquiry into BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy) and vCJD (variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease) in the United Kingdom is accessible here on the National Archives site. It includes the full report of the Inquiry (published October 2000), documentary evidence submitted and transcripts of oral hearings.

Codex Alimentarius

The Codex Alimentarius Commission was established in 1963 under the joint auspices of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN and the World Health Organization to produce international food standards, guidelines and codes of practice. All standards are listed, with the texts of most available for downloading.

Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is responsible for environmental protection, food production and standards, agriculture, fisheries and rural communities in England. Its web site has a wide range of information and documents including guidance, forms, consultations, reports, statistics, legislation and circulars. Site content relating to broad topics may be accessed via the subject headings at the top of each page, but given the size and complexity of the site, the detailed site map (an alphabetical list of narrow topics) and the search facility are particularly useful in locating individual documents. The links provided to other environment-related sites are also extensive.

European Food Safety Authority

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is a European Union agency providing independent scientific advice on all matters related to food and animal feed, including Community legislation. Its web site includes press releases and newsletters, as well as the scientific opinions and guidance of the various EFSA panels and committees.

FAO Legal Office

The Legal Office of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations provides access to FAO basic texts and to three databases of treaties, laws and regulations: FAOLEX covering food, agriculture and renewable natural resources; FISHLEX covering foreign fishing in coastal waters; and WATERLEX covering the management of rivers, lakes and other water resources which are on national boundaries.There is also full text, with status information, of treaties deposited with the FAO, and a range of publications including the whole series to date of FAO Legal Papers Online.

Food Safety – From the Farm to the Fork

This is a section devoted to food safety on the web site of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Health and Consumers. The “Food and Feed Safety” area contains a general food law section and a number of topical sections, most of which have links to relevant legislation. There are also sections on animal health and welfare and plant health.

Food Standards Agency

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) is a non-ministerial government department created in 2000 to protect public health and consumer interests in relation to food. Information and guidance on food law and regulation in the UK is to be found principally in the site's "Food Industries" and "Enforcement" sections.

Foodlaw-Reading

This site provides an extensive collection of information and links relating to UK, European and international food law. It is maintained by Dr David Jukes of the University of Reading School of Food and Nutritional Sciences.

Foot and Mouth Disease Inquiry

This archived section of the Cabinet Office web site has links to the reports (all published in 2002) of the three independent inquiries set up by the Government after the FMD outbreak of 2001: the Lessons to be Learned Inquiry, the scientific review by the Royal Society, and the Policy Commission on the Future of Farming and Food. The evidence submitted to the first two of these is also available.

General Pharmaceutical Council

The General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC) has been created to replace the Royal Pharmaceutical Council of Great Britain as the regulator for pharmacists, pharmacy technicians and pharmacy premises from 2010. A launch date has yet to be set, dependent on the parliamentary timetable. Its web site provides information on the regulatory changes and includes links to legislation and various background documents.

McLibel Trial

The libel trial between the McDonalds Corporation and a postman and a gardener from London became the longest running trial in English legal history, beginning in June 1994 and lasting 313 days. This section of the McSpotlight web site includes Mr Justice Bell's judgment of 19 June 1997, a selection of legal documents relating to the proceedings, witness statements, and information about the subsequent appeal. There are also news stories and press releases up to 2006 and a few legal articles. Court transcripts were available at one time but appear to have been removed.

Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency

The MHRA is an executive agency of the Department of Health, formed in 2003 from a merger of the Medical Devices Agency and the Medicines Control Agency. The site contains information, news and documents relating to the regulation of medicines and medical devices. Within "Committees" there are sections devoted to associated advisory bodies, including the Commission on Human Medicines and the British Pharmacopoeia Commission, containing annual reports and other material.

Pharmaceutical Society of Northern Ireland

The Society is the regulatory and professional body for pharmacists in Northern Ireland, exercising statutory powers and duties under the Pharmacy (Northern Ireland) Order 1976. The register is searchable online. Other content includes a Legislation section (containing the 1976 Order, byelaws and standing orders), the Code of Ethics, and details of the complaint procedure. A Fitness to Practise section has details of recent hearing outcomes.

Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) is the professional and regulatory body for pharmacists in England, Scotland and Wales. There are searchable registers of members, of pharmacy technicians and of premises. Documents on the site include byelaws, rules and regulations, and its Code of Ethics and Standards. Recent determinations are to be found in the "Protecting the Public" section. There is also information on the General Pharmaceutical Council, the new regulator planned for 2010.
