BAILII: Ireland
BAILII (the British and Irish Legal Information Institute) provides the most comprehensive set of British and Irish primary legal materials freely available online. Its Irish case law databases include the following decisions: Supreme Court of Ireland 1998 onwards; Irish Court of Criminal Appeal 2004 onwards; High Court of Ireland 1997 onwards; landmark decisions from earlier years; Irish Competition Authority 1991 onwards; Irish Information Commissioner 1998 onwards; and Irish Data Protection Commission case studies 2005 onwards. The legislation databases comprise Irish Legislation and Statutory Instruments 1922 onwards. Also included are Irish Law Reform Commission Papers and Reports 1976 onwards and Irish Treaty Series 1930 onwards.

Bar Council [Ireland]
This is a combined site for the Bar Council of Ireland, which is the governing body of the Irish Bar, and the Law Library of Ireland, which functions (in the absence of a tradition of barristers' chambers in Ireland) as the central working location of the practising Irish Bar. Its web site includes a fully searchable database of Irish barristers, and there is also general information about the Irish Bar and legal system, and a selection of links.

British and Irish Ombudsman Association
The BIOA site provides a list of ombudsmen and other complaint-handling bodies in the UK and Ireland. This gives brief information and contact details, with links to those ombudsmen and other bodies which have their own web sites. Publications on the site include the most recent annual report and an occasional newsletter The Ombudsman.

Competition Authority
The Competition Authority is an independent statutory body responsible for enforcing Irish and European competition law in Ireland. The site includes decisions 1992 onwards as well as civil and criminal court cases relating to competition law. There is legislation and related guidance, and a range of publications including articles and papers, information booklets, and annual reports 1998 onwards.

Constitution of Ireland
The Constitution of Ireland (1937) is provided here on the web site of the Department of the Taoiseach. The text is as enrolled on 27 May 1999, with amendments up to November 2004 incorporated. There is also a list of all the amendments effected between 1937 and 2004.

Courts Service of Ireland
The Courts Service was established in 1999 under the Courts Service Act 1998. Its web site provides information on the Irish courts system, including court forms, rules, practice directions, judgments, court offices, law terms, a legal diary, press releases, annual reports and legal links. The judgments database contains written judgments of the Supreme Court 2001 onwards and of the Court of Criminal Appeal and the High Court 2004 onwards.

Data Protection Commissioner
The post of Data Protection Commissioner was established under Ireland's Data Protection Act 1988. The site content includes information, guidance, legislation, codes of practice, case studies, annual reports and other publications. The Registration section includes the current list of registrations ("Public Register") maintained by the Commissioner. The Law section includes the 1988 Act, the amending Act of 2003, Regulations, and also what is termed an "informal consolidation" of the two Acts. |
Department of Justice and Law Reform
The responsibilities of Ireland's Department of Justice and Law Reform include crime and law enforcement, the Garda Síochána (police force) and policing, prisons and probation, law reform and state security. Information on the site includes links to relevant legislation, and there is a range of publications including annual reports 2000 onwards and press releases.

Equality Authority
Ireland's Equality Authority is an independent body established in 1999. It replaced the former Employment Equality Agency, with an expanded role in countering discrimination in employment, vocational training, the provision of goods and services, etc. Its web site includes codes of practice, good practice publications, research publications, articles, press releases, and annual reports 2000 onwards. Equality Tribunal
The Equality Tribunal hears or mediates complaints of alleged discrimination under Ireland's equality legislation. Its site includes a database of decisions with full text, summaries and legal keywords for all decisions and recommendations from 1996 onwards. Publications include annual reports 1999 onwards, annual legal reviews 2001 onwards, forms, leaflets and press releases, and there are links both to Irish equality legislation and to relevant European Union directives.

Guide to Irish Law
This overview of Irish law written by Dr Darius Whelan, a lecturer in law at University College, Cork, was first published on LLRX.com in August 2001 and updated on GlobaLex in June 2005. It covers the development of the legal system in the Republic of Ireland and the Irish Constitution of 1937 and describes online sources for primary and secondary legislation, courts and case law, government departments, the legal professions and university law departments. It also includes bibliographic details of significant books and journals.

Health and Safety Authority
The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) is the state sponsored body in Ireland with responsibility for securing safety, health and welfare at work. Its site includes a Legislation section, which lists Irish Health and Safety Acts, Orders and Regulations (with some links to full text). Amendments to legislation are listed. It also features (under the Inspections tab) details of prosecutions from 2005-2008. Other information includes codes of practice, statistics, forms, annual reports and press releases. Free publications can be downloaded and there is an online ordering facility for priced publications.

The Oireachtas is the national parliament of the Republic of Ireland, consisting of the President of Ireland and the two houses, the Dáil Éireann (House of Representatives) and the Seanad Éireann (Senate). Publications on the site include Dáil Debates 1919 onwards, Seanad Debates 1922 onwards, Committee Debates 1999 onwards, Bills (as published at each stage) and Explanatory Memoranda 1997 onwards, and Acts of the Oireachtas (in both Irish and English) 1922 onwards.

Iris Oifigiuil
Iris Oifigiúil is the Irish State gazette, the official medium for the publication of governmental, statutory and other notices. These include proclamations, announcements of Statutory Instruments made, and notices of appointment of receivers to companies. Publication is twice weekly, with occasional supplements throughout the year, and the online archive is 2002 onwards. |

Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service
INIS is responsible for carrying out the administrative functions of the Minister for Justice and Law Reform in relation to asylum, immigration (including visas) and citizenship matters in the Republic of Ireland. Irish Statute Book
The Irish Statute Book database comprises the Acts of the Oireachtas 1922-2010, Statutory Instruments 1922-2010, and a Legislation Directory for the period 1922-April 2010. The Directory contains various alphabetical and chronological lists and tables which enable users to identify whether a particular provision has been amended or otherwise affected since its enactment.

IRLII
IRLII - the Irish Legal Information Initiative - was established in 2001 by University College Cork Law Faculty to complement its contribution to BAILII. The index of cases is browsable by court and year, by subject, and by leading cases. It covers all decisions of the Irish High Court, Supreme Court and Court of Criminal Appeal 1997 onwards, plus some earlier decisions, with links to the full text on BAILII where available, and with citations of cases reported in Irish Reports and Irish Law Reports Monthly. Legislation content comprises Irish Statutes 1999-2008 and Statutory Instruments 2002-2008, and there is also a "Statutes & Related SIs" section which provides lists of SIs made under statutes with links to full text of SIs where available.

Labour Court
The Labour Court is an industrial relations tribunal, established in 1946, which resolves disputes about industrial relations, equality, organisation of working time and other employment matters within the Republic of Ireland. The site contains information on its purpose, organisation, procedures and services, and includes a database of Recommendations, Determinations and Decisions 1986 onwards, which is updated daily. Other content includes a "JLC/REA Rates of Pay" section, which has details of rates of pay by sector, a list of Employment Regulation Orders currently in force, and a list of current Registered Employment Agreements.

The Law Reform Commission is an independent statutory body established in 1975 to keep the law of Ireland under review and make recommendations for its reform. The site has details of both current and completed projects. All publications since its inception are available, including reports, consultation papers and annual reports. Other content includes an implementation table and a link to the Legislation Directory, a database documenting amendments made to primary legislation since 1922 which is maintained by the Commission but hosted on the Irish Statute Book site.

This site is run by IRLII at the University College Cork Faculty of Law, having begun life as a section of the IRLII site. The Attorney General is Ireland's chief law officer. The site includes information on the work of the Office of the Attorney General itself and of two other constituent parts, the Office of the Parliamentary Counsel to the Government and the Chief State Solicitor's Office, as well as information on the Statute Law Revision Project and the Irish Statute Book database which the Office produces. Publications and reports available in full text include annual report 2001 onwards.

Office of the Information Commissioner, Ireland
The site has information on the role, functions and powers of Ireland's Information Commissioner, a post established in 1998 under the Freedom of Information Act 1997. It provides links to that Act, the Freedom of Information (Amendment) Act 2003, and Regulations, as well as to an amalgamated version (for training purposes only) of the Acts. Office of the Ombudsman, Ireland
The Office of the Ombudsman was set up in 1980. It is responsible for dealing with complaints about the administrative actions of government departments, local authorities, the Health Service Executive, An Post (the Irish Post Office) and other public bodies in Ireland. "About Us" includes FAQs and information, with links, on the Ombudsman Act 1980 and other relevant legislation. Other sections provide information on how to make a complaint, press releases, leaflets and guidance. Annual reports are available 1994 onwards and investigation reports 1997 onwards. "Other Publications" include case digests 2000-2001 and 2008, and there is also a Sample Cases section.

Residential Institutions Redress Board
The Redress Board was set up under the Residential Institutions Redress Act 2002 to make fair and reasonable awards to persons who, as children, were abused while resident in Irish industrial schools, reformatories and other institutions subject to state regulation or inspection. Information on the site includes newsletters, annual reports, details of application and hearing procedures, and FAQs. The 2002 Act and Regulations are available to download, as is the Compensation Advisory Committee's 2002 report Towards Redress and Recovery ("the Ryan Report").

Revenue - more formally the Office of the Revenue Commissioners - is the Irish government agency responsible for customs, excise, taxation and related matters. Under the "Tax & Duties" tab there is information on specific taxes and duties, with links to leaflets, guides and other relevant material. The Supreme Court is the final court of appeal in all constitutional and civil matters in Ireland, and also exercises a limited jurisdiction in criminal matters in appeals from the Court of Criminal Appeal.
