Hosted by the University of Pittsburgh, the Archive of European Integration (AEI) is an electronic repository for research materials on European integration and unification. It contains not only official European Union or European Community documents, but also independently produced research materials.

Cabinet Office: European Secretariat Memorandum Search

This page on the Cabinet Office web site provides information about the process of scrutiny by UK parliamentary EU select committees, and evidence supplied by the government on EU documents deposited in Parliament, allowing government Explanatory Memoranda on these documents to be viewed.

Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe

The Council of Bars and Law Societies of Europe (CCBE) acts as the liaison between the European Union and Europe's national bars and law societies. Its web site includes the CCBE's Code of Conduct for European Lawyers as well as national codes of conduct, reports from committees looking at various topics and subject areas, position papers, newsletters 2002 onwards and press releases 2005 onwards.

Council of Europe

The home page of the Council of Europe site provides a useful starting point for all Council of Europe information, with links to the web pages of the Council's many institutions, secretariats, directorates and activities, including the Committee of Ministers, the European Court of Human Rights, the Parliamentary Assembly and the Treaty Office.

Council of Europe Treaty Office

The Council of Europe's official treaty web site provides both full text and summaries of the complete European Treaty Series (ETS) 1949-2003, and its continuation the Council of Europe Treaty Series (CETS) 2004 onwards, together with details of signatures, ratifications, reservations, etc.

Council of Europe: Committee of Ministers

The Committee of Ministers is the Council of Europe's decision-making body, comprising the foreign affairs ministers of all the member states or their permanent diplomatic representatives in Strasbourg. Documents include (under "Adopted Texts"): full text of Committee of Ministers decisions 1991 onwards and selected Committee of Ministers recommendations 1979 onwards; resolutions 1949 onwards; declarations 1977 onwards; and replies to Assembly recommendations 1982 onwards.

Council of the European Union

The Council of the European Union is the EU's main decision-making body. Its web site includes the Council's register of documents 1999 onwards, with access to full text of those documents which have been released to the public under legislation relating to transparency or upon request, and information about the meetings and activities of the Council.

Court of Justice of the European Union

The Court of Justice of the European Union, based in Luxembourg, comprises the European Court of Justice (officially the Court of Justice), the General Court (formerly the Court of First Instance) and the Civil Service Tribunal. The database on this site covers cases 17 June 1997 onwards, with search options that include case number and names of parties. Earlier cases 1954 onwards are available on the EUR-Lex site but may be accessed from this site by selecting “Numerical access”, which can be found under "Case-law" in the site menu. Other site content includes press releases 1996 onwards.

Dec.Nat: National Decisions

A database provided by the Association of Councils of State and Supreme Administrative Jurisdictions of the European Union, containing over 20,000 references to national decisions concerning community law, 1959 onwards, and last updated on 8th April 2010. 

DEsite

Developed by the Library and Faculty of Law of Tilburg University, and originally intended to be used by their students, DEsite gives a clear introduction to the structure of the institutions of the European Union and to their decision-making processes.

ELIXIR

ELIXIR is the European Lawyers' Information Exchange and Internet Resource. The site, launched in 2001 by Dr Julian Lonbay of the University of Birmingham, has information on the training, qualification and work of the various branches of the legal profession in each of the first 15 member states of the European Union, and on mutual recognition of professional qualifications within the EU.

EU Bookshop

The EU Bookshop, managed by the Publications Office of the European Union, provides online access to official publications from the EU institutions, agencies and other bodies. Content is fully searchable and can also be browsed by subject ("themes") or by institutional author ("authors"). Many publications may be downloaded free as pdf documents: others which are chargeable may be ordered online.

EU Legislation and Scrutiny Procedures

This is a Factsheet (revised October 2009) produced by the House of Commons Information Office describing how the United Kingdom Parliament scrutinises and seeks to influence the workings of the European Union. It includes a brief outline of the EU institutions and their methods of legislating.

EU Whoiswho

This is a searchable online version of the official directory of the European Union which is published by the EU's Publications Office. It provides information about the institutions, bodies and agencies of the EU. The site is updated weekly.

EUR-Lex

EUR-Lex is the European Union's web site providing access to EU law. It incorporates the EU's CELEX database and includes legislation in force, case law 1954 onwards, the Official Journal 1952 onwards, the treaties setting up the European Communities and European Union, and community preparatory acts. The site, which is maintained by the Publications Office of the EU, is updated daily.

Europa

Europa, the "gateway to the European Union", is the EU's portal site for information on all areas of EU activity, including its membership, history, institutions, laws and publications. The “Policies and activities” section includes links to information about the EU's activities indexed by subject; “About the EU” has links to web sites of the EU's institutions, agencies and other bodies; and “Publications and documents” provides access to case law, legislation, treaties and other legal documents.

Europa: Official Documents from EU Institutions

This page of the Europa web site brings together in one place links to official documents of the EU institutions and bodies which are contained in various sections of the Europa site. These include the Official Journal, public registers of documents, and documents of the individual institutions, agencies and other bodies.

European Agency for Safety and Health at Work

The European Union's Occupational Safety and Health Agency (EU-OSHA) was established in 1996. Its web site has links to EU legislation and proposed legislation, recent news, documents from research programmes, and other information relating to occupational safety and health. The Publications section includes annual reports 1996 onwards, factsheets, reports, and other publications. "Press Room" includes press releases 1999 onwards.

European Commission

The European Commission is the executive body of the European Union. Its functions include proposing legislation, implementing agreed policies, upholding EU law, and negotiating international agreements. The "Policies and legislation" section has information on EU law (including links to the EUR-Lex and PreLex sites) and the application of EU law throughout member states. Both basic and advanced search options are provided, together with a sitemap and a detailed A-Z index of site content.

European Commission Central Library

As well as ECLAS, the union catalogue covering the European Commission's Central Library and around twenty-five smaller specialised libraries, this site also includes a directory of European Documentation Centres in EU member states.

European Commission: Competition

This section of  the European Commission's web site is devoted to competition law and policy. It provides links to a wide range of documents, including relevant Official Journal content, legislation and case law. There is also an online Competition Policy Newsletter, 1994 to date.

European Commission: Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities

This is the web site of the European Commission's Directorate General for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, which is concerned with employment and social policy within the EU, including anti-discrimination measures. Site content includes links to legislation, consultation documents, newsletters, recent news and other documents.

European Commission: Translation and Drafting Resources

This page on the European Commission web site provides links to online databases and guides to style and clear writing in the official languages of the EU. There are also links to a number of resources dealing with EU terminology.

European Convention

The European Convention was a forum, chaired by Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, set up in 2001 by the European Council to produce a "European Constitution", a framework for the future development of the European Union. The web site includes the draft constitutional treaty produced by the Convention, information about the Convention's proceedings, and press releases. The Convention completed its work in July 2003, but the site remains open for consultation.

European Court of Human Rights

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), based in Strasbourg, was set up in 1959 under the European Convention on Human Rights. Information and documents relating to the history, composition and working of the Court include the HUDOC database of the case law of the Convention, the Court Rules, the text of the Convention and protocols, and dates of ratification. The HUDOC case law database covers the European Court of Human Rights, the defunct European Commission on Human Rights (1954-1998), and the Committee of Ministers. RSS feeds are available for ECHR news, webcasts and Information Notes.

European e-Justice Portal

The European Union's portal for information on justice and access to judicial procedures.  The main page has content categorised for citizens, businesses, legal professionals, and judiciary.

European Environmental Law Network

The T.M.C. Asser Instituut based in The Hague hosts this site devoted to European environmental law and policy. Content includes links to relevant treaties, to full-text legislation of the EU and individual member states, and to case law of the European Court of Justice, the European Court of Human Rights and the International Court of Justice.

European Information Association

The EIA is an international body of information specialists whose aim is to develop, co-ordinate and improve access to EU information. The site includes links to basic information about the EU, information about EU databases, a news archive November 2008 onwards and, on the "Publications" page, a selection of articles from 2006 and 2007 issues of Focus, the association's journal.

European Judicial Network in Civil and Commercial Matters

The European Judicial Network in Civil and Commercial Matters was set up by the Council of the European Union to improve and simplify judicial cooperation between member states of the EU. The site provides much general information about the administration of justice in Europe, aimed largely at the layperson but with extensive links to EU legislation and other documents.

European Ombudsman

The European Ombudsman investigates complaints of maladministration by institutions and bodies of the European Communities. The site includes general information, annual and special reports, the text of the European Code of Good Administrative Behaviour, all decisions 30 June 1998 onwards, and selected earlier decisions.

European Parliament

The European Parliament's web site includes information on its role, organisation, legislative and other powers, procedures, membership and activities. Documentation includes reports, debates and parliamentary questions. A register of documents and document search facility can be accessed via the "Parliament and you" menu in the "Parliament" section. Links include the national parliaments of member states (most easily accessible via the site map).

European Parliament: The Legislative Observatory

The Legislative Observatory is a database, updated daily, of procedure files and factsheets on the progress of EU legislative and non-legislative procedures involving the European Parliament. Users who register (free of charge) for the "Observatory tracker service" can keep track of new developments in specific chosen procedures or subjects.

European Patent Office

The Law section of the European Patent Office's web site, under the Patents tab, includes the text of the European Patent Convention and an online version of the book Case Law of the Boards of Appeal (5th edition, 2006). Both of these are accessible under the heading Legal Texts. The Case Law book is also accessible under Appeals in the same section, together with a complete searchable database of decisions of the EPO's Boards of Appeal from 1979 onwards.

European Union A to Z Index

This is a set of links to information on the official web sites of the European Union's institutions and specialised agencies in Europe, provided on the web site of the European Commission Delegation in Washington. Besides a comprehensive A to Z index there are several specialised indexes, including an index of EU law sites.

European Union: A Guide to Tracing Working Documents

This guide, on the GlobaLex web site, to finding working documents or "travaux préparatoires" from the various institutions of the European Union is written by Patrick Overy, Academic Support Consultant for Law and Business at the University of Exeter and manager of the Exeter European Documentation Centre. The current edition is dated May 2010, with the previous version, dated November/December 2008, also available.

Europedia

Europedia is a web site edited by Nicholas Moussis, Visiting Professor at the School of Law, Emory University, Atlanta, and based on his book Access to European Union: law, economics, policies. The site aims to provide "a roadmap of the European Union". It describes the laws and institutions of the EU, with particular emphasis on integration, and with links to relevant web sites.

Freedom, Security and Justice

This site is managed by the European Commission's Directorate-General of Justice, Freedom and Security. It includes a “Virtual Documentation Centre” linking to relevant legislation and policy documents, information about projects funded by the Directorate-General, and a "Newsroom" including press releases November 2002 onwards.

Hartley: The Foundations of European Community Law 6e

As well as providing updating for Trevor Hartley's textbook The Foundations of European Community Law (6th edition, OUP, 2007), this section of the Oxford University Press web site provides access to an interactive map of Europe and an interactive timeline of the EU, which respectively provide key facts about the member countries of the EU and key dates in EU legal history.

Information pursuant to Protocol 2 annexed to the Lugano Convention

On the web site of the Court of Justice of the European Union, this page gives access to the texts of the Brussels Convention 1968, the Lugano Convention 1988, and Council Regulation (EC) No.44/2001 on Jurisdiction and the Enforcement of Judgments in Civil and Commercial Matters, as well as relevant case law from the European Court of Justice and national courts 1992-2008. The site content is produced in cooperation with the Saarland University Institute of Law and Informatics.

Justis EU

Subscription service covering EU legal information from 1951 to the present. It provides access to the European Commission's CELEX database of EU law and to the C Series of the Official Journal of the European Union, with extensive cross-referencing. The Human Rights section includes databases of European Court of Human Rights cases from 1960 onwards and of European Human Rights conventions and protocols. Updating frequency varies according to database.

Labour Web

Labour Web is a European labour law site produced by the Faculty of Law and European Documentation Centre at the University of Catania (Italy). “Documentation” includes current and proposed directives, EU case law and other documents, EU press releases and statistics, and also relevant material from member states and international organisations.

Lawtel EU

Subscription service offering access to all types of EU document, with hypertext links to related EU and UK documents. Updated daily.

PreLex

PreLex is a database which follows EU decisions and legislative proposals as they go through the major stages of the decision-making process between the European Commission and the other EU institutions, and monitors the work of the institutions involved. Links are provided to available electronic texts such as COM documents, the Official Journal and European Parliament documents.

Publications Office of the European Union

The Publications Office is the official publisher for the European Union. The site includes information on new and forthcoming publications, links to online resources such as EUR-Lex and the online directory EU Whoiswho, and a link to the EU Bookshop site for information on obtaining both priced and free publications.

Treaty of Nice

This dedicated Europa site includes the full text of the Treaty of Nice, ratification status, fact sheets and other related material. The site was archived on 1 August 2008.

TSO Online Bookshop: European Union

The Stationery Office (TSO) site's European Union page has lists of titles published by TSO and the Publications Office of the European Union (formerly the Office for Official Publications of the European Communities) during the last few years. There are basic and advanced search options and titles can be ordered online.
