Adjudication Panel for Wales

The Panel's role is to form tribunals to consider whether members of local authorities in Wales have breached their authority's statutory code of conduct. Its web site includes procedural information, decisions (in the Register of Tribunals section) and annual reports.

Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales

CSSIW is the body responsible for regulating and inspecting establishments and agencies which provide social care services in Wales. Links to legislation are provided in the section "The Law". Other sections have inspectorate reports, annual reports, newsletters, information leaflets, and details of the complaint procedure.

Care Council for Wales

The Care Council, set up under the Care Standards Act 2000, is responsible for registering and regulating social workers and social care workers in Wales. Its online register is searchable. The "Registration and Conduct" section provides access to the register and includes codes of practice and guidance on the complaint procedure. Other site content includes consultations, recent annual reports, newsletters and e-bulletins.

General Teaching Council for Wales

The General Teaching Council for Wales (GTCW) was set up under the Teaching and Higher Education Act 1998 as the self-regulating professional body for the teaching profession in Wales. It maintains a register of qualified teachers in Wales which is searchable online. Site content also includes the Statement of Professional Values and Practice and other regulatory documents, information on GTCW's disciplinary procedures and rules, and brief details of recent disciplinary hearing outcomes.

Healthcare Inspectorate Wales

The Healthcare Inspectorate Wales promotes improvement in the quality and safety of patient care within NHS Wales, and is also, since 1 April 2006, the regulator of independent healthcare in Wales. Publications include healthcare standards and the text of all reviews and investigations which it undertakes. There are links to legislation in the "About Us" section. The "Site Index" provides an A-Z index and a "document map" in addition to a conventional site map.

Legislation.gov.uk: Wales

Welsh legislation on the UK's official legislation database includes Measures of the National Assembly for Wales 2008 onwards and Wales Statutory Instruments 1999 onwards. Measures are reproduced as revised, with an option to select the original "as enacted" text under "What Version" on the left of the screen. Wales SIs are not revised. Explanatory Notes to Measures are included if published.

National Assembly for Wales

The National Assembly for Wales is a devolved assembly, now (since the coming into effect in May 2007 of the Government of Wales Act 2006) with power to make primary legislation ("Assembly Measures") in certain areas. These areas include education, the environment, health and social care, housing, social welfare, transport and others. Site content includes records of proceedings, Standing Orders, details of Measures passed and in progress, and a link to the Government of Wales Act 2006.

NHS Wales: Mental Health Act 1983

This NHS Wales microsite provides information on the Mental Health Acts 1983 and 2007 in Wales, including guidance; booklets and leaflets; links to secondary legislation on the OPSI site; the Mental Health Act 1983 Code of Practice for Wales; information on the Mental Health Review Tribunal for Wales; forms; and training materials to support the implementation of the Mental Health Act 2007.

Planning Inspectorate - Wales

The responsibilities of the Planning Inspectorate for Wales include the processing of planning and enforcement appeals, holding inquiries into local development plans, listed building consent appeals, advertisement appeals, and reporting on planning applications. Its web site provides information, guidance, and downloadable documents and forms.

Public Services Ombudsman for Wales

This service replaced from 1 April 2006 the separate offices of Local Government Ombudsman for Wales, Health Service Ombudsman for Wales, Welsh Administration Ombudsman and Social Housing Ombudsman for Wales. It investigates complaints about public services in Wales, including local government, National Health Service organisations, the National Assembly for Wales, and many public bodies. The web site has information on the Ombudsman's role and the complaint procedure, investigation reports, and annual reports.

Special Educational Needs Tribunal for Wales

A separate devolved Special Educational Needs Tribunal for Wales (SENTW) came into being in September 2003. Its web site has contact details and information aimed primarily at parents in Wales whose children have special educational needs.

Valuation Tribunal for Wales

The Valuation Tribunal for Wales (VTW) deals with appeals about non-domestic rates and council tax. Its web site has information (much of it in the form of FAQs) and guidance on appeals in Wales, and provides access under "Listings and Decisions" to both English and Welsh appeal decisions, on rating 1993 onwards, and on council tax November 1995 onwards.

Wales Legislation Online

Created by Cardiff Law School, this site provides a comprehensive analysis of the powers of, and legislation made by, the National Assembly for Wales. Powers are set out under subject headings, distinguishing those which are exercisable solely by the Assembly, those exercised jointly with central government and other bodies, and those exercisable solely by central government in relation to Wales. General Statutory Instruments made by the Assembly, either on its own or with central government, and those applying to Wales made by central government, are listed and summarised.

Wales Office

The Wales Office, created on 1 July 1999 as successor to the Welsh Office, is the Whitehall department through which the Government liaises with the devolved administration in Wales. Documents on the site include press notices, reports and speeches 1999 onwards. There is information on recent England and Wales legislation which has specific provisions or implications for Wales, with links to texts on the OPSI site.

Welsh Assembly Government

The Welsh Assembly Government is the devolved government for Wales. Areas of responsibility include the economy, health, education and local government. Originally an executive body of the National Assembly for Wales, its functions were formally separated from those of the Assembly by the Government of Wales Act 2006. Much of the site content is arranged under broad topics, eg health and social care, transport, etc. Other sections provide news, publications, and details of current consultations. The Legislation section provides access to legislation both draft and in force, including Assembly Measures, general Statutory Instruments (via a link to the OPSI site), local Statutory Instruments, and non-Statutory Instruments (eg codes of practice, compulsory purchase orders).
