BAILII: Case Law
BAILII (the British and Irish Legal Information Institute) provides the most comprehensive set of British and Irish primary legal materials freely available online. There are over 50 case law databases, covering both courts and major tribunals, listed in "BAILII Databases" under the following headings: England and Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Ireland, United Kingdom and Commonwealth, and Europe. Most databases contain predominantly recent material (especially from around 1997 onwards), but older decisions are being added on an ongoing basis along with new cases. To view the current coverage of any specific database select the link in the "BAILII Databases" listing. Recently added decisions, both recent cases and older ones, can also be accessed via the "Recent Decisions”, "Recent Additions", and “New Cases of Interest” links on the front page. There are various options for both basic and advanced searches, and a complete A-Z case name index.

Boston University School of Law: The Year Books
The Year Books, precursors of modern law reports, are the principal source materials for the development of legal doctrines in the English courts from the late 13th century to 1535. Many have been printed, but others remain in manuscript form only. The database on this site, compiled by Professor David J. Seipp of Boston University, provides a searchable index to and paraphrase of printed Year Book reports. Also on the site is a list of old printed editions of Year Books, a list of manuscripts with locations, and an annotated bibliography of over 80 articles and books about the Year Books.

CommonLII: English Reports
Based on data provided by Justis, this section of the CommonLII web site includes all of the reports from English Reports, covering the years 1220 to 1873, as pdf page images. The cases can be browsed by name or by year, or the database can be searched via the search options near the top of the page. |
Current Legal Information
Subscription service, providing summaries of cases, journal articles and other legal materials in a set of searchable databases. These inclusde the Current Law Cases database 1986 onwards and Legal Journals Index (including case reports in legal journals) 1986 onwards. There is also a Case Citator. The LRDI Grey Paper Index, 1993 onwards, includes practice directions. Content is updated daily.

Department for Social Development in Northern Ireland
The "Law and Legislation" section of the DSD's site includes case law of the Social Security Commissioners and Child Support Commissioners for Northern Ireland 1972 onwards (via the NIDOC case law digest) and an electronic version of the printed volume "Reported Decisions of the Social Security Commissioners and Child Support Commissioners 1978 to 1999," both of which are maintained by the DSD's Decision Making Services. Electronic versions of Northern Ireland's "Blue Volumes" and "Orange Volume", containing collections of current social security and child support legislation, are also available.

Department for Work and Pensions: Decisions of the Commissioners
This section of the Department for Work and Pensions site provides access to decisions of Upper Tribunal (Administrative Appeals) judges (in the Social Entitlement jurisdiction) and Social Security and Child Support Commissioners, 1991 onwards. Also available here is Neligan's Digest, a summary of important reported decisions of the Social Security Commissioners arranged by benefit or topic.

Employment Appeal Tribunal
The Employment Appeal Tribunal (EAT) is a superior court of record, with jurisdiction in England and Wales and Scotland, which deals with appeals from decisions of the Employment Tribunals, the Certification Officer and the Central Arbitration Committee. The site has cause lists, procedural information, guidance notes, forms, a consolidated version of the Employment Appeal Tribunal Rules 1993, and full text judgments July 1999 onwards.

First-tier Tribunal (Tax): Decisions
The First-tier Tribunal (Tax) was established on 1 April 2009, replacing four former separate tribunals - the General Commissioners of Income Tax, the VAT and Duties Tribunal, the Special Commissioners of Income Tax and the Section 704/706 Tribunal. The decisions database here within the First-tier Tribunal (Tax) site includes decisions of the defunct tribunals, 2002 onwards (searchable April 2003 onwards), with a few selected earlier decisions.

Industrial Cases Reports Express
This free service from the Incorporated Council of Law Reporting provides brief summaries of cases to be included in Industrial Cases Reports, 2007 onwards. The cases are in summarised form and indexed by subject and name, with those from January 2008 onwards also being indexed by date. There is also a "Latest Cases" section.

Judicial Committee of the Privy Council
The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council (JCPC) is the highest court of appeal for many current and former Commonwealth countries, as well as the UK's overseas territories, crown dependencies (Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man), and military sovereign base areas. This new web site, created following JCPC's move from Downing Street to Parliament Square in 2009, includes details of JCPC's role and powers; lists of relevant legislation; procedural information (forms, rules and practice directions); details of current cases and future sittings; and judgments ("Decided Cases"). Judgments from 1999 to August 2009 and selected key judgments before 1999 remain on the main Privy Council Office web site, to which a link is provided on the "Decided Cases" page.

JustCite
Subscription service. JustCite is a cross-referenced indexing service and citator to a wide range of UK and European legal information. This includes all the series indexed by the Law Reports Index 1951 onwards; Smith Bernal's transcripts from the Court of Appeal, Queen's Bench Division, Chancery Division and EAT 1996 onwards; all UK legislation 1235 onwards; the European Union's CELEX legal database; and several series of Irish law reports. Links to full text on Justis, Lexis Direct services or Westlaw are available, if subscriptions to these services are also held. A free service giving basic references for cases and legislation is also available via JustCite.

Justis
Subscription service. Full text databases of UK case law in Justis include The Law Reports, Weekly Law Reports, English Reports and The Times Law Reports, and a number of other specialised series such as Criminal Appeal Reports, Industrial Cases Reports and Mental Health Law Reports. The search software allows for linking to cited cases within each series, to cases in other databases, and to relevant statutes and SIs. Updating frequency varies according to database: information about currency of each database is available via the drop down menus on the "Search In Cases" screen.

Lands Tribunal: Decisions
All final decisions of the Lands Tribunal 2000 onwards, in a searchable database, with a separate list of cases appealed to the Court of Appeal.

Lawtel
Subscription service. Lawtel contains summaries of reported and unreported cases 1980 onwards, with links to full text transcripts online wherever available. Full text of other cases can be obtained by applying to Lawtel. Cases are put online within 24 hours of judgment being given. A separate database - Lawtel Personal Injury - includes an update service plus case law and articles, and is also updated daily. The Quantum Reports database goes back to 1980. Major personal injury cases are included as are a wide range of unreported cases from the County Court.

LexisNexis Butterworths: Cases Search
Subscription service. Coverage includes full text of All England Law Reports 1936 onwards, All England Commercial Cases 1999 onwards, All England Law Reports European Cases 1995 onwards, All England Reporter (digests), and an archive of full text official transcripts. The start date for the digests and transcripts is October 1997. Site content is updated daily.

LexisNexis Professional: UK Cases
Subscription service. The case content of LexisNexis Professional includes reports from over 40 series of UK law reports including Weekly Law Reports, All England Law Reports, and Industrial Relations Law Reports. Transcripts are available of all cases from the House of Lords, Privy Council and Court of Appeal (Civil Division) 1980 onwards, of Administrative Court cases 1983 onwards, and of selected cases from other divisions of the High Court.

Northern Ireland Courts and Tribunals Service
The Northern Ireland Courts and Tribunals Service, an agency of Northern Ireland's Department of Justice, administers the courts of Northern Ireland, comprising the Supreme Court, the county courts, magistrates' courts, coroners' courts, and certain tribunals. Information and documents on the site include: court and tribunal addresses; court lists; reports; consultation papers; information leaflets; press releases; recent legislation relating to the courts (eg court rules); and selected full text judgments 1999 onwards.

Restitution and Unjust Enrichment Legal Resources
This comprehensive site for restitution law resources is produced by Professor Steve Hedley of University College Cork. It has full text judgments in restitution cases from England and Wales 1990 onwards, some as links to other sites and others as documents on the site. There are also links to cases and legislation from many other jurisdictions, links to journal articles and abstracts, and a general introduction to the subject.

Scottish Courts
Scottish Courts is the web site of the Scottish Court Service, an executive agency of the Scottish government which is responsible for the Court of Session, High Court of Justiciary, Sheriff Courts, Justice of the Peace Courts and the Office of the Public Guardian. The site also provides brief details of other courts. There are Court of Session opinions September 1998 onwards (commercial cases January 1998 onwards) and selected full text judgments of the High Court and Sheriff Courts. Opinions pages are updated daily at 2 pm. Court rules and Rolls of Court (i.e. lists of business) are also available.

Supreme Court: Decided Cases
The "Decided Cases" section of the UK Supreme Court's web site contains the court's judgments, October 2009 onwards, published after they are handed down. Earlier judgments are available on the House of Lords web site. |
Swarb.co.uk
This site is produced by David Swarbrick, consultant with Wrigley Claydon Solicitors. The link to "law-index" provides digests of over 78,000 cases up to the end of 2000, browsable by subject. It is a selection from the full Lawindexpro database, a subscription service, with over 230,000 case listings and links to over 195,000 full text decisions, updated daily.

Upper Tribunal (Administrative Appeals)
The Administrative Appeals Chamber of the Upper Tribunal is a superior court of record, with UK-wide jurisdiction. It deals with appeals from the General Regulatory Chamber, the Health, Education and Social Care Chamber, the Social Entitlement Chamber and the War Pensions and Armed Forces Compensation Chamber of the First-tier Tribunal. It also deals with first appeals from decisions of the Independent Safeguarding Authority and of the Traffic Commissioners. Upon its establishment on 3 November 2008 it took over the work of the former Social Security, Child Support and Pensions Appeal Commissioners, who dealt with appeals on points of law from Social Security, Child Support and Pensions Appeal Tribunals. The site has information, guidance and downloadable forms. It also provides access either on the site or via links to decisions 1991 onwards for England & Wales and Scotland (and to some earlier decisions), and also to decisions 1973 onwards (and a very small number of earlier ones) of the separate Northern Ireland Commissioners. (Reported decisions are also available on the Department for Work and Pensions site.)

There are also transcripts of unreported cases 1999 onwards. The service is updated daily.

WLR Daily
WLR Daily is a free service from the Incorporated Council of Law Reporting. It contains summarised reports of cases heard by the Supreme Court, House of Lords, Privy Council, Court of Appeal, and all divisions of the High Court, as well as the Court of Justice of the European Communities, that have not yet appeared in the Weekly Law Reports. Coverage also includes cases to be reported in The Business Law Reports and The Public and Third Sector Law Reports. The database is updated daily Monday to Friday.
